A spirited footy song, 15 years in the making and hoped to rival Up There Cazaly and That’s the Thing About Football, has been produced in the Barossa.
It’s the work of Tanunda’s visual performance artist Darren McCrae and a newcomer musician, who is keen to see his take on football retold through music.
He recently produced a CD of his song Grand Final with help from recording artist Simon Marschall, also of Tanunda and it is getting rave reviews.
“I’m a visual artist and previous to this spent a year in SA playing for West Adelaide, seven years as a forward scout for Kangaroos and Carlton, and eight years in SANFL for North Adelaide and Woodville West Torrens,” said Darren, who was born in Broken Hill.
Darren, who now owns McCrae Galley, John Street, Tanunda, is optimistic his song will soon be picked up by a major record label but like most musicians understand it takes time and patience.
“I’ve been making music for 20 years and my mum was an opera singer, so it’s definitely what I like to do alongside creating art,” he added.
His catchy song, which captures the spirit and moment of grand final day was originally part of an EP (five songs) “but because of the song’s hype it is hoped to be released on its own,” he added.
Darren said he praises the work of Simon who worked with him to produce back up vocals and musical accompaniments.
So far his song has been heard by football personalities such as Mark Bickley, Warwick Capper, Denis Pagan plus Darren’s manager and ABC football commentator Rod Campbell who said “the song captures the passion, excitement and aroma that is grand final day”.
