Ellen Mace’s spirits continue to soar after she was handed an aviation membership on Friday.
The Year 10 Kapunda High student was presented Adelaide Soaring Club’s first junior flying scholarship - worth $3200.
Delighted with her prize, the 15-year-old said she has already selected her senior school subjects to lead her towards a career as a pilot.
“I have a passion to fly and have so since I was a child,” she said.
Earlier this year Ellen choose Ayers Rock airport for her work experience.
Ellen said she gained knowledge about the operations and was given the chance to speak with pilots, whom she said further inspired her.
In her application to the club, Ellen revealed she is one of seven children so the scholarship would mean a great opportunity as family finances are stretched.
“I am very motivated, and if I go for something then I am committed to it 100 per cent,” she explained.
Geoff Wood, the club’s president who presented the scholarship during a school assembly, said Ellen was selected because of her passion towards flying.
“She showed a commitment to the club, persistence, and some aptitude in flying,” Geoff said.
Ellen will spend 30 hours training in a Jabiru light aircraft from Gawler Aerodrome off Two Wells Road and also be part of on-ground training.
Once her training is complete, she will receive a pilot certificate, which entitles her to fly an ultra-light aircraft.
“This training provides credit towards getting general aviation and commercial licences in the future,” Geoff added.
The club’s junior scholarship will run annually and will again be open to young people living within Light Regional Council.
