In the space of six weeks, Lisa Wilson went from never having played indoor netball to being selected to play for Australia.
And with it comes the opportunity to represent her country at the 11-day World Championships in South Africa in March next year.
Always a star in traditional netball, Wilson, from her young junior days, had a goal of representing Australia.
“I’ve now achieved that dream,” Wilson said. “I just didn’t think it would be indoor playing in the nets.”
The 28-year-old Hewett resident recently was named as the playing-coach of Willaston in the Barossa, Light and Gawler competition in 2010.
Her signing follows a career high of being part of the 2009 Oakdale State League premiership team.
“I had never thought of playing indoor netball until a teammate at Oakdale Bronwyn Heap said the state side was looking for a goalie and thought I would be perfect,” Wilson said.
“With the national championships coming up in Adelaide in October and only six weeks away I said I would fill in.
“It is certainly different with the players using the net and in the smaller space you have to really time your leads.”
South Australia played 13 games during the championships and eventually finished third behind Queensland and New South Wales.
“We lost our semi-final in overtime to New South Wales but Queensland was the standout team.”
Wilson, the goal shooter, had only one half of a game off during the tournament.
“I had to go out on a girlfriend’s hen’s night when they had a dinner at the end of the nationals and got a text message telling me I had made the Australian team.
“It was a shock as I knew nothing about the side, and then found out we go to South Africa next year to play in the World Championships.”
Wilson said it would cost $5000 to make the trip and she would have to take her 11-year-old son Jordan with her on the trip.
“I will have to do some fund-raising and clear it with the officials that I can take Jordie before I can make the trip.”
