Dedication to Nuriootpa hall

31 Jan, 2012 01:51 PM
The four members of the Nuriootpa Soldiers Memorial Hall committee have spent a total of 125 years donating their time to keep the historic building in working order.

Now, with their plans and aspirations for the building realised, the committee has decided it is time to call it a day and will be handing over control of the structure to Barossa Council.

While Bob Steinborner and Jim Richards will continue on as caretakers of the hall, the committee has been disbanded, ending an era of rejuvenation for the grand hall.

Bob has spent 45 years working with the hall, while Hazel Humberdross and Ruth Richards have both been involved for about 40 years.

Ruth’s husband, Jim, joined the committee about 25 years ago when it was formed through the combination of the ‘men’s committee’ and the ladies auxiliary.

A main feature of the committee’s tenure at the hall has been their willingness to spend money to improve the building.

This included installing air-conditioning and re-painting the building inside and out to keep it looking elegant.

From the beautifully restored roof and elegantly-hung stage curtains, to the refurbished kitchen area, the committee has put its heart and soul into making the hall what it is today.

This is not to mention the works needed to replace the timber floorboards after the 1983 floods filled the sunken kitchen area and destroyed the floor in the main hall.

Built in 1924 in commemoration of the soldiers who fought in World War I, the hall has been used for many different activities over the years, including movie screenings.

While the projector has long been switched off, the hall remains well-used for a range of events, including birthday parties and social gatherings like the monthly old-style dances, which have been running for more than 30 years.

“We have just taken a very keen interest in the building for all the years we have been on (the committee),” said Bob.

“We have just loved doing what we have done.

“We have all had a real passion for the building and the fact it is a place where the community can come and meet for different reasons. We are going to miss it in a way.”

The committee also paid tribute to Barossa councillor Scotty Milne for his efforts on the committee over the past five years.
