Country Press award winners

02 Mar, 2010 04:20 PM
The Herald won two major accolades at the annual Country Press SA newspaper awards on Friday night.

Michelle O’Rielly accepted the Excellence in Journalism award, while Graham Fischer, editor, was named joint winner for Best Sports Photo.

Michelle was recognised for her work which prompted police to investigate an alleged con woman.

The award judge commended Michelle for her persistence and reporting skills.

“Michelle deserves the highest praise for not taking the information at face value,” Kim Tilbrook said. “Her decision to check and check again paid dividends. It’s a lesson all journalists should heed.”

Graham achieved his second consecutive category win, this time he caught Marcus Hearl, of Nuriootpa, moments before he fell from his harness gig at the trots in Kapunda.

Judge Ray Titus said Graham’s knowledge of harness racing was key to the success.
