There was a chorus of “yes” from about 330 Nuriootpa Primary School students when Mayor Brian Hurn asked who enjoyed breakfast this morning.
That was last Thursday and it was when the school officially launched their breakfast club.
Mayor Hurn was on hand to commemorate the ongoing work of volunteers and organisers including Rose Hegarty.
Rose, who is employed by Lutheran Community Care, co-ordinates the breakfast club which kicked off term three on July 28.
Since then, each Monday morning, about 20 school students have joined in the former dental building on the school grounds to tuck into a healthy breakfast.
“The breakfast club is open to all students, with the aim to equip students to meet the demands of the day by providing a healthy breakfast,” Rose said.
“It’s done in a safe, supportive environment and to establish positive links with local service clubs, community agencies and churches.
The club’s popularity has meant it now opens each Friday.
It runs from 8.15am to 8.45am and a caring team of volunteers serve the students with cereals, reduced fat milk, wholemeal and wholegrain toast, fresh fruit. Some Mondays have included breakfast specials such as eggs, smoothies, banana pancakes or muffins.
In addition, the club allows the young students to become acquainted with the area’s volunteers.
“It’s a wonderful coming together of our community,” Rose added.
