Citizen of the Year
Living with a disability, Wes Liersch knows the difficulties many other disabled people face each day.
That’s why the Tanunda man became involved in the Disability Access Review Committee (DARC) since its inception in 1997. He has worked hard on the committee since November 1996 when he successfully lobbied for an advocacy group to represent people with a disability.
His passion and efforts resulted in a committee founded within the Barossa Council. Wes is also a member of the Tanunda Town Band where he holds the title of president.
Joint Young Citizen
At 18, Shane Rosenzweig has done more than most people double his age.
The Tanunda man has been an outstanding leader for his school, Faith Lutheran College, sports and the community.
He represented Australia as an exchange student to Faith’s sister school in New York and was the recipient of the 2010 South Australian Premier’s School Spirit Prize.
The premier’s initiative meant placing an official wreath at the Anzac Day Service at Villers-Bretonnieux.
In 2011 he was commended in the Order of Australia Association, SA with a student citizen award.
Joint Young Citizen
Sarah Doecke is the perfect role model for Barossa’s young people.
The Angaston woman immerses herself in a host of Barossa events and activities, and raises funds aimed at young people.
Her generous nature has seen her raise money for events such as the Shenanigans Dinner, which has raised over $3000 to assist youth programs in the Barossa.
She helps with the family income by assisting her mother to create homemade pastries and biscuits sold weekly at the Barossa Farmers Market and the biennial Yalumba Harvest Market.
Sarah supports Zion Lutheran Church and is a youth leader for Tanunda based Fuse.
She helps take care of her younger sister Rachael who lives with Wolf Hirschorn Syndrome.
Community Event
A three-day dance event held in Mt Pleasant has resulted in community groups benefiting from proceeds.
The Mt Pleasant Dance Weekend, hosted by the Mt Pleasant Dance Group, was run in August with dances held at Angaston, Nuriootpa and Mt Pleasant Soldiers Memorial Hall.
About 100 patrons from SA and interstate attended.
Now in their 19th year, the group has contributed $27,000 to organisations.
