Uniquely Aussie expressions including “g'day” and “no worries’ resounded the Tanunda Show Hall this morning (Thursday) as people joined for Australia Day celebrations.
A hot breakfast including bacon, eggs and coffee greeted the hundreds of visitors, thanks to Barossa Council and volunteer groups.
Six Barossa residents were welcomed as Australian citizens.
The highlight of the day included the announcement of award winners with Les Liersch of Tanunda presented with Citizen of the Year; joint Young Citizens of the Year went to Sarah Doecke of Angaston and Shane Rosenzweig of Tanunda, and the Mt Pleasant Group Dance Weekend was named Community Event of the Year.
Mr Liersch, who lives with a disability, was chosen for his leadership skills and support of Disability Access Service and to Tanunda Town Band.
He was plucked from a group of worthy recipients -Barry Chinner, Barry Falland, Carole Hick, Jim Ireland and Karen Hargrave - who were also congratulated by visitors.
Sarah Doecke reflected the true nature of her award as she is currently volunteering her time in Indonesia.
She was awarded for supporting the Barossa through community groups such as the Barossa Farmers Market and through fundraising initiatives.
Her father Noel and younger sister Rachael graciously accepted her award.
In response to his award, 18-year-old Shane gave an evoking speech about what is it to be Australian.
A group of Mt Pleasant Group Dance Weekend members were on hand to revel in their award.
For the past 19 years the members have raised about $27,000, which has gone on to support community services such as CFS, Red Cross, cancer support and the Royal Flying doctors.
