Barossa trio really can dance

So you think you can dance?

Well, three students from the Turning Pointe School of Dance sure can.

Tizana Saunders has been named winner of the Royal Academy of Dance Sir Robert Helpmann Award.

“It’s really cool to do the RAD Awards,” Tizana said.

“It’s a good experience too and it’s really exciting to win it.

“It’s just really fun to perform in front of other people and (have) people watching you do what you really love to do.”

The 12-year-old was one of three Barossa dancers to make her mark at the awards.

Charles Herkes, from Angaston, and Georgina Lehmann, from Tanunda were also selected as finalists.

Charles, 12, won the Eileen Hogarth Training Enhancement award at the prestigious event.

In an ode to the Barossa, the Angaston youngster has requested a bunch of grapes be engraved alongside his name on the trophy as a permanent reminder that he hails from the wine region.

Georgina, 11, said there is no rivalry between the three friends.

“It was really fun because they were there,” Georgina said.

“They made you not feel as nervous because you knew that you had some friends near so it was good to talk to them before you went on.”

The trio, who all train 15 to 18 hours-a-week at the Salisbury-based dance school, all have big aspirations for the future.

“My goal is to get into a good company somewhere overseas and dance there for a while and then after that I thought I might start a school somewhere,” Georgina said.

The Royal Academy of Dance Awards were held in Adelaide on June 14.

Many past winners have gone on to have successful careers in the dance industry.
