BAROSSA Valley archers have a new target. The region’s archery club has set its sights on a new clubhouse.
Currently, in true Robin Hood style, the club meets in a forest clearing on the outskirts of Tanunda. The band of merry men (and women) meet every third Sunday to hone their craft at Archery Road, Tanunda.
The club’s original clubhouse was destroyed in the Tanunda floods way back in 1983.
For the past 27 years they have operated out of a shed lean-to.
Caroline Girke, club secretary, said members were excited about the prospect of a new clubhouse.
“We’ve received some funding to level the ground which is the first stage in our project,” Caroline said. “Now we need to raise as much as we can to build the clubhouse.”
The Barossa club was established some 40 years ago and aims to develop members’ archery skills in a relaxed and friendly social atmosphere.
With an emphasis on family Caroline says a lot of members get involved when they see how much fun their kids are having.
“We have many junior members. It’s a great activity for the whole family.”
Safety is paramount and new members are trained in the correct way to shoot a bow.
A novice can be target shooting after a week’s training and the club can supply the necessary equipment including a bow for first timers. For more information contact Caroline Girke on 0411 284 877.
