One of Australia’s most valuable viticulture scholarships will be renamed in honour of a former Barossa vigneron.
The Barossa Viticulture Technical Group has announced the annual Barossa Young Viticulturist Fellowship has been renamed the Geoff Knights Viticulture Innovation Award, in recognition of the late Geoff Knights (1945 - 2009).
As well as managing his Light Pass vineyard, Geoff committed 40 years to supporting innovation among growers and viticulturists in the Barossa region.
He was a founding member of the Barossa Viti-Tech Group, and active in a number of regional and wine industry committees.
The Viticulture Innovation Award provides $10,000 for an individual to explore an innovative viticultural idea or topic through study, travel or a project that can deliver benefit to the Barossa.
Now in its fourth year, this award is possible because of the generous support of foundation sponsors Elders Limited and Barossa Grapegrowers’ Vine Selection Society Inc, joined this year by Grape Barossa.
Chris Rogers, the Viti-Tech Group chairman, said without the support of the key sponsors the award would simply not be possible.
“In the current economic climate it is to be applauded that there are organisations willing to continue supporting the future of the Barossa wine industry,” Mr Rogers said.
Applications are now open for the next Viticulture Innovation Award - an opportunity for anyone who is actively involved in the wine-grape industry.
The application criteria has been broadened to include anyone 18-years or older.
