The stud operation of the Lindsay Park thoroughbred business will remain on the Angaston property although about 900 acres is being placed on the market.
Stud principal Sam Hayes confirmed the stud business, which currently operates on about 650 acres, was being retained by the Hayes family.
On Monday, David Hayes announced he had decided to sell about 900 acres of Lindsay Park, including the famous homestead and two other houses.
“It is surplus to my requirements,” David said.
“Just as my father Colin moved from Semaphore to Angaston, now I’m moving to Euroa in Victoria .
“It is a business decision to help me plan for the future for my family just as Dad did for his when he moved up here to Angaston.”
David said he had no idea what value would be placed on the land but expected it would be “in excess of $14million”.
“I hope it can be purchased by someone who might like to keep it as a racing property, but who wants to buy it is beyond my control.”
David sold the raceside part of Lindsay Park in July to a stable client, Victorian businessman Wayne Mitchell.
Hayes’ longtime stable foreman Tony McEvoy joined the venture which has been renamed Kildalton Park.
David said he had thought long and hard about selling.
“Quite simply everyone sells their house at some time in their life and that is what I am doing as I have moved to Euroa to help further my career,” he said.
Sam Hayes said he was interested in buying the property.
“Realistically it has come on the market about three years before I would have liked but we (Lindsay Park Stud) will be conducting due diligence to see if buying the land is an option,” he said.
After re-establishing the stud business in 2005, Sam Hayes and business partner Darren Thomas purchased the remainder of the breeding business from David Hayes in 2008.
“The racing stable and the stud share a lot of history, as well as the Lindsay Park name,” Sam said. “However we operate very different businesses. David trains horses and we breed them.
“We respect David’s decision and we have enjoyed operating from adjoining properties however this move does not directly affect the stud or our plans.”
“Being based here in SA is an integral part of what we are passionate about. We believe we can stand top quality stallions in South Australia, stallions that will attract some of the best mares from right across the country.”
