The electorate incorporates parts of the Town of Gawler, Light Regional, Barossa, and City of Playford councils.
Parts of Angle Vale, Davoren Park and Freeling were lost in boundary redistribution. Has gained Roseworthy and Gawler Belt.
The electorate is named after Colonel William Light, the first Surveyor-General for South Australia.
At the 2006 election Tony Piccolo attracted 44.6 per cent of the primary vote and defeated Liberal Malcolm Buckby by 857 votes (after the distribution of preferences.
Minor parties (Family First, Greens, No Rodeo and Democrats) made up less than 16 per cent of the 2006 vote.
When Tony Piccolo was elected he was the first Labor candidate to claim the seat in 62 years.

The electorate has the River Murray as it’s eastern boundary and includes parts of the Barossa, Mid Murray, Light Regional and Adelaide Hills councils.
It was created at the 1994 redistribution and contested for the first time at the 1997 election.
Ivan Venning has held the seat since its was formed when Custance disappeared.
The boundary redistribution has seen Freeling included in the electorate.
At the 2006 election Ivan Venning gained 47.3 per cent of the primary vote.
The Liberal stalwart won the seat by more than 2600 votes (after the distribution of preferences).
Although soundly defeated, both Labor and Family First made significant in-roads in 2006. Labor support jumped 12 per cent and Family First had a 7.8 per cent boost.

A country district extending from Port Augusta, its main population centre, to the Northern Territory and Queensland borders and east to the New South Wales border.
Includes parts of the Light Regional and Mid Murray councils as well as the Goyder Council.
The state’s second largest electorate, Stuart covers the north-east outback east of Lake Torrens and the Oodnadatta Track.
The main population centre is Port August.
In 2006, the result in Stuart was the closest in the state.
Just 233 votes separated the Liberal and Labor candidates - after preferences were distributed.
Graham Gunn came out on top to continue his career as Australia’s longest serving politician.
