Gawler battle against bad behaviour

03 Aug, 2010 03:07 PM
Gawler police have launched a new initiative to combat alcohol-related street behaviour in the town.

Police have established a forum to find practical solutions to overcome the problem behaviour.

The forum comprises representatives from licensed premises, the Liquor Licensing Commissioner and the Australian Hotels Association as well as Gawler Council and member for Light Tony Piccolo.

Mr Piccolo said one aim of the initiative is to develop an accord among various parties to agree on what action each stakeholder can take to improve community safety.

“The forum will identify issues that go beyond the individual licensee and see how we can, as a community, better manage any anti-social behaviour in the public sphere,” he said.

Mr Piccolo also said a lack of public transport at the time licensed premises closed was an issue likely to contribute to some street behaviour because revellers were remaining on the streets rather than going home.

Mr Piccolo has held discussions with the Public Transport Division of the Department of Transport to explore options to improve public transport.

The forum is interested to hear from residents about any issues they believe need to be addressed. Suggestions can be directed to Mr Piccolo’s office on 8522 2878.
