What is a politician's promise worth?

What is a politician's promise worth?

Everyone will be pleased to hear the promise for a new Barossa Hospital.

But what is a promise worth?

On Monday, the State Liberal Party pledged to spend $35million to build the new facility. Taking it on face value we accept the Liberals want to build a hospital.

However, unless voters across the rest of the state unite to return the Liberals to government - the promise won’t be worth anything.

But we should also remember this promise has been made before.

The Liberals offered it when they were last in government, almost 10 years ago. They couldn’t deliver then. Even if the Liberals form government, shouldn’t they at least add a time-line to their commitment?

Would it be too much to ask for the builders to get busy before the 2014 election?

There’s more work to be done before the pledge could become a reality.

The small matter of talking to the custodians of the Angaston and Tanunda Hospitals might be a good place to start.

Nobody has yet approached the Barossa Health Advisory Council, which owns these health facilities, in trust, on behalf of the community. Then you actually have to find the $35million. The Liberals say they have the funds - but the Labor Government hasn’t really been interested while in charge.

Mike Rann and his team managed to allocate $100,000 for a business case study, but that was a year ago and we still haven’t heard anything.

What else can be done to make sure studies and promises actually result in action.
